The Long Tail Theory
June 17, 2009
Magalys , a reader of this blog, has decided to collaborate and get me this article about the Long Tail .
The Long Tail Theory in positioning web
The Long Tail Theory was coined by Christian Anderson, editor in chief of Wired magazine. Is basically a market model favored by the Internet and new technologies that reduce the costs of communication and distribution of a product. The Long Tail Theory states that the majority of its revenue from an online store with different products come from the sale of many rare or unusual consumption, rather than the sale of many popular products.
This approach applies not only to online sales, the Long Tail Theory explains the behavior of users on the Internet and can be applied in many other areas, such as keywords, links and sale of advertising, sections were viewed on a website, among others.
Long Tail keywords
When a user performs an Internet search using several keywords that describe what you find. Most visitors who come to a site come from a long list of combinations of keywords. Taking into account that markets keyword little minority defendants are generating more traffic, many feel that the Long Tail theory can be used to help rank a page on the website by exploiting a niche of little used words frequent. That way, when you can not compete with any keyword in high demand, associated with a site before, it was competing with several key words to compensate less frequent traffic that could be seen for the first. Therefore, the more unusual words are added to a blog or page, the greater the potential for increasing visitors through search engines.
However, the task of finding a niche keywords that relate directly to the web is very difficult to position, and direct visits associated with rare words, not directly related to the main topic of the website, has many disadvantages because obviously Most visitors are not interested in the content and sales will not always be expected even if they achieve a high traffic. Visits are by chance and not certainty.
Complement Theory Long Tail
The use of theory in Long keywords can be supplemented by incorporating a Corporate Blog, which can create content of interest to users connected to the main activity of the company. This will not only generate traffic, it can be seen as an added value for the company and create a bidirectional communication channel with the same customers. Information can even be about the products offered by the company, tips for better use or maintenance, among other things that are useful for visitors. Undoubtedly keep a blog is hard work but pays off by improving the position if not abandoned.
