Testing the XBMC

A month ago I’m trying to fund the XBMC as a possible alternative to MediaPortal and MythTV HTPC that assemble on. And the feelings are bittersweet, but more bitter sweet.
In the absence of an in-depth analysis (which I can not promise I fatal over time) a brief sketch of what I have seen these days.
I love the look of XBMC, especially any of the Skins can be mounted. We have a really spectacular. It is a software that almost does not need anything else. There is only one program is within the player and the configurator. MediaPortal is not like that one side is the program for another configurator and manager of another TV. Installed and 30 seconds as we see our multimedia files on your PC. Also, it requires really big machines. And the best part is that it is multiplatform, you can install Windows, Linux, Mac and Xbox. But that concept becomes multiplatform against him sometimes. The way to handle it is a bit chaotic at times.
The strengths on the XBMC would be:
- Program multiplatform, same on any system that we have
- Self, without almost anything else we can mount our multimedia
- Systems skins spectacular
- Setup fine, meaning it can parameterize any details about the program, achieving a high degree of customization.
- It works with a not very powerful hardware
The weak are:
- Interface somewhat convoluted at times, to understand some concepts.
- You do not have full support for all remote controls. I have tried several commands and none that I can work with any command. The worst thing is that almost always fails when you play a file, especially the pause key and back again. It lacks some of editor keys and support for remote controls.
- It lacks a TV module
But that is a great program especially with the Aeon skin, becomes a work of art. So it will remain in our installation disc and go HTPCs new drawing, with Iran as it is installed. Customers at the end we can roll but I like to give them the opportunity to choose, and everyone decides to use that program. This past week we finished two HTPCs, carrying multimedia software:
- MediaCenter Vista
- MediaPortal
- Software imon
- PowerCinema gift that came with the Hauppauge 4000
- XBCM
In the case of other HTPCs with Linux, because we:
- MythTV
- XBMC
- Elisa
And as I told the customers try and use the one you like best, which best suits your tastes. This is the grace of computers, which each use what he likes.
