The folly of therapeutic ringtones

March 16, 2010

Another thing you may not, but in the realm of geeks and fun discoveries to the Japanese did not win one. The latest trend that is beginning to cause fury in the country of the rising sun are mobile tones ‘ therapeutic ‘, ie that with the supposed properties of its waves can be cured from various diseases, headache, to allergy.

It may seem a joke, but remember that recently in Spain an application that supposedly could strip virtually all other people using a camera phone as a scanner if it were airport, also beat records for downloads. Much of the credibility they have earned these peculiar melodies are due to the strong reputation of Matsumi Suzuki , director of the Institute for Japanese ringtones (yes, we see that have an institution dedicated to it) already became popular in its day with a beep they could hear only the young and supposedly could be used to scare the masses into the demonstrations.

Among other applications, Mr Suzuki is also responsible for a app for iPhone that translates your dog’s barking. All melodies are characterized by having something to do with what they intend to settle in the body. Thus, curing a hangover is a series of soft sounds perfectly in tune with the body’s biological rhythms, or to rejuvenate the skin harnesses the power of something called alpha waves.

According to the company marketing the tones, these are becoming incredibly popular and have started to download massively, with sounds that solve almost any problem we have in everyday life, not just doctors, also rejuvenate the skin or remove the laziness, for example .

Curious as many times, out of naivete or ignorance, pseudoscience can get to raise more passion than science itself , without going any further, which is hidden behind a simple mobile phone. I’m not saying that no sound can have some healing power, particularly in psychological and emotional, but that to cure pollen allergies through a tone for the mobile I believe it goes beyond all logic.

We’ll see what it takes to reach other countries.

Mozilla testing a new “account manager” (Account Manager)

March 16, 2010

Mozilla

Mozilla is working on a prototype for its Firefox browser that allow loguearnos on websites with a single click, without having to enter data .

The function prototype is called “Account Manager”. As you can see in the picture above, to the left of the address bar would appear on a key icon that indicates that we can not login at this site by simply clicking on this icon and selecting “connect” or “disconnect” (obviously before we had to keep our data access in the “Password Manager “).

This feature requires a protocol extension to the web, so invite all those who are developers, administrators and people in the scene have a look at the standard specifications.

As we say at the moment a prototype is in the throes of experimentation. So far only works on certain sites: Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Mozilla Addons, Mozilla Bugzilla and Get People. Certainly a good idea that would soon spread to other browsers …

How fast you can connect a server?

March 16, 2010

From the 12th of this month and to 21 is being performed SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin where you can see live performances, films and interactive stands. Technology is one of the protagonists and indeed there are many talks that we can not see (like Google in China: Context and Consequences ).

The people of the company The Planet made a curious competition in which competitors have to connect a server in the shortest amount of time possible. The will to do a Asus Eee PC , probably the netbook most famous of the market.

The person that starts the computer in the video is Phil Jackson and is merely a demonstration, since it is one of the employees of the company. By the way, reminds me of the classic movies where the soldiers must overcome their time assembling weapons. Version geek the soldier would be this, no doubt.

WWF joins the dark side to save the planet

March 15, 2010

The World Wildlife Fund (World Wide Fund for Nature, in English) is distinguished by memorable advertising campaigns. On this occasion, its subsidiary in Belgium has been suspended from Darth Vader to give promotion to the Earth Hour (Earth Hour), an annual initiative to generate a global outage on the last Saturday of March.

The Earth Hour started in 2007 at Sydney , and has become a global event in subsequent editions. For this year, will be held on 27 March from 20:30 to 21:30 pm . In 2009, 88 countries and nearly 400 cities worldwide participated in the blackout. Even Google has supported, where in 2007 he decided to change the white background of your site by a black one, but then decided that the form will not repeat the action in 2010 by user confusion.

The video is the responsibility of the Belgian agency Germaine . The purpose of this announcement is to engage younger audiences. After all, the message he gives is that Darth Vader “is not as bad guy, just a family man but faces some image problems.”

On the journalistic disdain for technology initiatives in Mexico

March 15, 2010

This morning caused a stir in the twittósfera Mexican publishing a notice in Excelsior entitled “Tequila Valley to lead Fudan cyberworld. In this text, is attributed to MAWR Ramirez and Juan Antonio Gámez the creation of that community. What is the problem? Simple: Tequila Valley there since 2008, and its function is far from “lead cyberworld. According to the description on their website, Tequila Valley is “an open community content development and creation of new media, and growth-oriented technology benefit the country.” What a difference.

The first to react was MAWR Ramirez , who noted in his account of Twitter it was never his intention attributed the founding of the community, and it was all a mistake by the newspaper. Mawr said that he and his partner had brought the shirts to give promotion to Tequila Valley , and it was all a misunderstanding. Immediately, the twittósfera I pointed out to eroor Pascal Beltran del Rio , managing editor of Excelsior . Beltran issued an apology on its own, and undertook to correct the note shortly.

End of story? For nothing. Far from criticizing the lack of investigation of the note (just enter the website Tequila Valley to confirm), I want to delve into the disaffection of sections of technology in many newspapers Mexico . Accustomed to being a mere filling-or the best, a supplement, the notes are handled loosely. It is a bad spread not only in this section, but in science, health and culture. Such is the indifference that there are even cases of newspapers copied the entire contents of a blog (for example, a Vanguard seem to love our tickets).

An error in a note is understandable, but what can not be justified is the ignorance of the source . Just as Tequila Valley , there are many other technology initiatives in Mexico, other development projects. The material is out there. However, many newspapers were too lazy to investigate, search, build a good story. I do not blame the reporters, many of them are sent to these sections to fill a quota and are neither fairly specialized in the field. And is that the reign of journalistic disdain for technological work, mistakes like Excelsior will remain the rule rather than the exception.
