Squeeze wins on your hard drive space in Snow Leopard

February 28, 2010

Squeeze, cómo molan los iconos de Mac

Snow Leopard introduced a novelty in her HFS filesystem that did not get much publicity: the ability to compress files and treat them just like normal files. This compression is enabled in certain applications of the system to reduce your disk space, and although Apple has made some utilities for the console, has given no option graphic to select another folder.

Squeeze is a small program that installs as a preference pane and works in the background doing precisely that task. Once you specify the folders you want to keep compressing them, analyze and process all your files. This task, since it is held in the idle time of your processor, take a while, but at the end we won more or less depending on the type gigs of files that are compressed.

The side effects of this application may be several. First, the CPU be busier , since you have to unzip a file each time it is opened. But as they say, in most cases only a small part decompress the file, which will remain in the cache memory and also the additional time will be offset by the lower number of data to be read in our relatively slow hard disk. We must also bear in mind that this application detects when a file is not ideal to compress (eg a video or a song), obviously.

Another problem is that file systems are usually very sensitive, and make a transaction of this nature can become corrupt the system on failure. In principle this is unlikely, since we are using official tools from Apple, as well Squeeze works on a copy, so that in case of error would be the original files intact.

The only drawback I’ve found that apart from this is that is not compatible with Bootcamp . That is, files compressed with this scheme can not be read from Windows, I suppose because the driver is not activated. The application works only in Snow Leopard because it uses the system discussed in the beginning, and costs about $ 10. Fortunately, these days we get so free through MacHeist so … make haste!

Using two (or more) instances of both Dropbox

February 28, 2010

Drobpox es, sin duda, una de las aplicaciones más triunfadoras de 2009

The official wiki Dropbox have a great trick to use Dropbox several accounts at once , at least in systems Unix (ie Linux and Mac). The aim was clear: to expand capacity beyond 2GB on the free account, but we could also think of other objectives less base as the ability to use different accounts for different purposes.

The idea is simple and is based on deceiving the successive copies of Dropbox changing the start of our user directory . Thus preferences are saved in an alternate folder for each extra copy you install. This preparation is finished by adding that pitcher custom startup items, so we do not have to worry about and everything works automagically.

To do this the quickest way is the terminal, and wiki Dropbox have ready a list of commands to execute. Having said that, although a little change to Linux and Mac that both commands are in that very mascaditos wiki, we must remember that this little hack requires some skill with the console: open and basically know how to write. Now we just need someone to tell us how to do it in Windows … any ideas? Will the create a shortcut?

Microsoft on TED2010: Maps showing the world Bing

February 28, 2010

The TED2010 is over, but the great talks I heard the lucky attendees will go out gradually. One is given by Blaise Aguera , the architect behind Bing Maps , and view it worthwhile to discover what is working at Microsoft.

Most of the service and you said Yira the last month, but have shown an experiment that is absolutely awesome. To begin, have taken pictures at the doorstep of a market that is, with panoramic trade indoor . To achieve this have been one of those cameras on the hat of an employee. They have also integrated various services such as augmented reality, showing data points in the direction where there is a trade.

The spectacular is that not only have integrated images with Photosynth, but have also installed the infrastructure for stream video live so geopositioning . This in itself is fine, although it seems that has no practical application beyond the number of lawsuits for invasion of privacy that would rain on Microsoft.

But the future becomes more exciting if we think we can achieve this effect by simply using Android, iPhone or other mobile compass. Question of time and under video, not long.

Blaise Aguera is not the first time you visit these conferences, as taught for 3 years as coauthor of invention Photoshynth. This technology has evolved today in Bing Maps, making it a worthy competition from Google Maps at least in America. As a bonus, the retired Bill Gates has also gone through this TED2010, to talk about energy.

Lyrics Training: Practice your English while listening to songs

February 28, 2010

Lyrics Training te enseña que las canciones en inglés son igual de sosas que en castellano

I bring a proposal for this Sunday both entertaining and educational, lest you sit wrong: Lyrics Training . This website is composed of clips of songs in different languages, with the letters embedded in it. The grace of the matter is that the letters do not appear directly, but you have to go filling in the gaps you . That is, first heard the song and then trying to guess the letter.

This system will surely sounds of college English classes, those where you put your teacher American Pie and I gave a copy to fill in gaps. We can choose between three difficulty levels, and we also have other languages, but for now unless there is a lot of videos in English.

It works great and is very fluid, so that for the video if you’re not going fast enough to give us time to writing. Once written it automatically continues the line two seconds behind, so you only have to worry about writing. You also have the option to automatically translate each line into another language, and learn exactly what it says.
